Gibbs Wire going for growth in UK market.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Tom Molnar – who recently retired in late 2010 – is probably one of the most authoritative voices in the global world of steel; he also held the post of VP Sales and Marketing at Gibbs Wire and Steel – itself a world class source for wire and strip and still growing after 50 years in business….

So when asked about Gibbs’ relationship with Firebird, the company’s European distributor for Gibbs products, it’s worth hearing Tom’s views:-

“The first thing is that we have implicit trust in Neil and his team,” said Tom “Neil has a strong metals background, very technically oriented and we have no fears sharing commercial intelligence when appropriate”.

Like the experience of many Firebird customers, Tom also praised Firebird’s speed of response.

“It’s almost scary!” Tom asserted “If we have a query on an enquiry, Neil gets straight back to us whether it’s morning, noon or night.  That’s because Neil can then, in turn, get a price to his customer faster…

When you’ve been around as long as we have you get to know most of the players and how they handle things.  On a scale of 1-10 I guess most would come in at around 7 or 8.  Neil’s a 12 in our book…..”

Going forward, Director of Marketing Jim Mintun says Gibbs foresees the relationship growing and developing with Firebird: –

“We’re getting some significant tonnage enquiries from Firebird for very high quality material.  Couple that with Neil’s customer service ethos which exactly chimes with ours – and things can only move forward!”

Jim spent many months in the UK some 20 years ago as the company sought a “footprint in the UK” as he says, but the country was in recession at the time and a number of discussions inevitably ran into the sand…

“It’s early days, but we’re making good progress with Firebird and Neil and his team could be the presence we want in the UK” said Jim.

Gibbs itself is a remarkable company – beginning from one small operation in Connecticut back in 1956 it now has a growing network of strategically located metal service centres across the USA and Canada.

Gibbs has a great team with many long term employees; indeed the entire structure of the business has been built around the team concept.

The company is also renowned for its philosophy of astonishing customer service: –

“We’re in the top two or three in customer service” Jim concluded “and that’s what attracted us to Firebird; Neil is cut from the same cloth and we’re looking to accelerate our relationship with him and his customers….
